24hr URINE IMMUNOELECTROPHORESIS
Synonyms: Bence Jones Protein; Protein Electrophoresis, Urine; Urine Immunoelectrophoresis for Myeloma Proteins; Urine Light Chains
Nursing Alias: Immunoelectrophoresis (U)
Use: The immunoelectrophoresis technique separates urine protein into its major fractions and identifies the presence or absence of the immunoglobulin components. Normally only a small amount of albumin is present in the urine. In Iymphoproliferative diseases, such as multiple myeloma and Waldenstrom’s macroglo bulinemia, however, immunoglobulin production may increase dramatically and one or more immunoglobulin chains may 'spill' over into the urine. The presence of kappa or lambda chains is called 'light chain disease'. The presence of the larger molecular weight, IgA, IgM, or IgA chains is called 'heavy chain disease'.
